Until the Bees Return

A live performance where the human body becomes ecological infrastructure.
Until the Bees Return is a curated live activation of The Department of Species Services, in which a dancer assumes the role of a Seasonal Human Pollination Technician. Moving through the installation as a pollination worker, the performer interacts with California poppy flowers, spatial sound, and AI-generated visuals. Through repeated gestures of touch, care, and labor, the performance transforms human pollination into an embodied ritual, asking what forms of work may emerge when ecological collapse and artificial intelligence begin to reorganize human purpose.

Until the Bees Return is a live activation of the interactive installation, transforming the speculative role of the Human Pollinator into a choreographed ecological procedure.
Within the world of The Department of Species Services, the performer is cast as a Seasonal Human Pollination Technician, a worker assigned by an AI-managed ecological system after the collapse of native pollinators. The performance centers on the seasonal relationship between the yellow-faced bumblebee and the California poppy, imagining what happens when this fragile exchange can no longer be sustained by nonhuman species alone.
Wearing the DSS Pollination Glove, the dancer moves through the installation with careful, repetitive gestures of hand-pollination. Each movement becomes both a task and a signal, activating haptic feedback, spatial sound, and AI-generated visuals. The performer’s body becomes a temporary substitute for the bee, but also something more complex: a worker, an instrument, a sensor, and a living interface within a larger ecological system.
The performance unfolds as a dialogue between body, machine, and plant. Sound responds to movement. Visuals shift between speculative futures and ecological memory. The installation becomes activated not only as a space for interaction, but as a system of labor, attention, and choreography.
At once procedural and poetic, Until the Bees Return asks what it means for a human body to be reassigned by AI into the service of another species. In this future, humans are not replaced. They are recruited into the unfinished work of ecological survival.
